Ruben Dias: The Personal Life of Portugal's Wall at the 2026 World Cup.

"The reasons why we broke up are private and belong to us and we've both dealt with it in a very mature way." That's Rúben Dias in May 2026, confirming his split from Love Island host Maya Jama — about 18 months after they went public — just weeks before he flew out to represent Portugal at the World Cup.

The timing matters. Dias is right in the middle of one of the biggest tournaments of his career, with Portugal facing Spain for a quarterfinal place. Whatever is happening off the pitch, he's been asked to park it.

The breakup, in his own words

Dias was unusually candid about the split. "Respect me, respect Maya, and understand that not always one has to betray the other in order for a relationship to end," he wrote. For someone who guards his private life carefully, that statement was clearly deliberate — a way to shut down speculation before it spiraled.

He has no children, though he's said publicly that building a family is something he wants down the line.

Where Dias comes from

Born and raised in Amadora, on the western edge of the Lisbon metropolitan area, Dias is entirely of Portuguese descent. His parents — João and Bernadete Alves Dias — were central to shaping him as a footballer early on.

When Rúben was nine, his father used a contact to get him into C.F. Estrela da Amadora. Two years later, his parents took him to Benfica's academy for trials. That decision changed everything.

The rest is a fairly straight line from Benfica's youth setup to one of the best center-backs in the world — and now to a World Cup last-eight tie against Spain, where Portugal will need him at his most focused.
