Inter Milan had done the groundwork. They had history with him, a ready-made pitch, and a hometown advantage. Chelsea came late, moved fast, and Xabi Alonso picked up the phone. That was enough.
Marco Palestra, the 21-year-old defender who arrived at Stamford Bridge for £47 million ($62m) this summer, was candid about how the switch happened. "He told me what he wanted from me, his ideas, and other things," Palestra said of Alonso. "Not only football. Yes, football, for sure, but not only. It was a good conversation about everything, so I was very happy with it."
That's the Alonso effect in transfer negotiations — and it's becoming a pattern at Chelsea. Morgan Rogers signed a record-breaking deal in part because of a conversation with the head coach. Now Palestra. BlueCo keeps writing the cheques, but Alonso is closing the deals.
What Chelsea are actually getting
The £47m fee looks steep on paper for someone with one loan season in Serie A under his belt. The numbers make it harder to argue with. Palestra finished the 2024/25 campaign as the fastest player in Serie A, averaging 27.96 km/h. He also won Serie A Defender of the Year — in a division that doesn't hand that award out as a participation trophy.
Alonso specifically cited his flexibility as a key factor. Right-back, left-back, wing-back — Palestra covers the width of a defensive line. For a coach who builds systems that demand positional intelligence from full-backs, that versatility is currency.
The pace is almost absurdly useful. What makes it a better story is that Palestra wasn't always quick. "When I was young, like 15, I remember I was the slowest one in the team," he admitted, switching briefly to English for maximum effect. "It's crazy, crazy things."
Early signs at Stamford Bridge
Palestra has impressed through Chelsea's preseason and is already integrating socially — spending time with Aaron Anselmino, Estevao Willian, Joao Pedro, and Dario Essugo. Reece James, still on post-World Cup rest after guiding England to third place, has already messaged him. "He said to me that he is happy I joined Chelsea and to write to him for advice," Palestra recalled.
He hasn't played a competitive minute yet, but Chelsea's right-back and left-back markets look considerably healthier with him in the building. Anyone pricing up Chelsea's defensive solidity for the new Premier League season should factor in a player who just outran an entire division.
"I prefer to win something for Chelsea and nothing me," he said, when asked about chasing another Defender of the Year award. That's the right answer. Whether the reality matches the sentiment is what the next nine months will actually tell us.
