Lionel Messi has retired from international football. The 2022 World Cup-winning captain confirmed it on social media Monday — 207 appearances, 125 goals, and a chapter that started in 2005 is now closed.
"Time is running short, chapters come to a close, and this is one that hurts me deeply," Messi wrote in his statement. "I've given it my all, I have nothing left to give." It's hard to argue with that. The man delivered Argentina their first World Cup in 36 years and backed it up with Copa America titles. He didn't leave anything on the table.
Mourinho among the first to respond
Jose Mourinho — who spent years trying to stop Messi during his time at Chelsea and Real Madrid — replied directly to the Instagram post. "Congratulations on a brilliant and unforgettable international career," the Portuguese wrote. "The next Copa America and the next World Cup won't be the same."
Coming from a man who dedicated considerable tactical energy to containing him, that carries real weight. This wasn't a generic tribute from a friendly face.
Messi cited the emerging generation as part of his reasoning, noting there are "really great young players coming through behind me who deserve their chance." At 39, he's not wrong — but that doesn't make the transition any easier for Lionel Scaloni's side. Argentina built their entire attacking identity around him for nearly two decades. Rebuilding that takes years, not a transfer window.
What's left for Messi at club level
He's contracted with Inter Miami through the end of 2028, which means MLS gets four more years of a player who, even at this stage, alters betting markets just by being in a lineup. Miami's title ambitions live and die by his fitness and form.
For Argentina, the World Cup qualification picture just shifted. Scaloni has talent to work with, but the psychological weight of replacing the player who carried this national team's identity — and its tournament expectations — for 19 years is something no squad depth chart can fully account for.
