Javier Aguirre is heading back into club football after wrapping up his second spell in charge of Mexico following the World Cup, and he has now agreed to become Valencia CF's new coach in LaLiga. Speaking at Mexico City International Airport before boarding his flight to Spain ahead of his official presentation next week, Aguirre revealed just how much thought went into the decision.
"El Vasco" admitted he turned down several other opportunities before settling on Valencia, including one from within Mexican football itself.
"I talked it over with Silvia (his wife); we were in limbo about whether to stop once and for all, we had rejected four job offers from different countries including Mexico, but we chose this one because I have spent many years in Spain, we had deep roots there, I spent 15 seasons there and we said: OK, it will be a nice way to end my career," Aguirre said.
Coming at 'the right time'
Aguirre also spoke about the timing of the move, describing it as a good moment in his career to take on a club of Valencia's stature.
"It's an extremely important club, a historic one, I think this opportunity comes at a good time for me, I'm calm, I'm relaxed, I'm very focused on myself and my family and I'm going to give it my all," he said.
Before returning to the Mexico national team, Aguirre had been in charge of Real Mallorca in LaLiga, where he guided the club to a Copa del Rey final and helped them steer clear of relegation. He is now set to be officially unveiled as Valencia's new head coach next week.
