LaLiga is back, and El Clásico's two giants are nowhere to be seen on opening weekend. Not injured, not protesting — just absent by design.
The Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) granted clubs with a significant number of players involved in the Women's World Cup semi-finals or final the option to delay their first league match. Both Real Madrid and Barcelona hit that threshold and took the extension. The arrangement shifts their matchday 1 fixtures to the week of 25–27 August.
When do they actually play?
Here's where it gets slightly confusing. Neither club will play their 'official' season opener first.
Real Madrid face Espanyol on Saturday 22 August — that's their matchday 2 fixture. Their matchday 1 game against Real Sociedad follows on Wednesday 26 August at the Bernabéu. Barcelona flip the same script: they open against Elche on Sunday 23 August, then host Athletic Club on Thursday 27 August at Spotify Camp Nou for their rescheduled opener.
So in practice, both clubs will have played twice before their 'first' game. Make that make sense.
What's actually happening this weekend
While Madrid and Barça watch from a distance, the rest of LaLiga gets started without them. Saturday 15 August brings Alavés vs Getafe and Sevilla vs Rayo Vallecano. Sunday sees Racing take on Villarreal and Espanyol host Levante. Deportivo play Elche on Monday 17 August — giving the division a genuinely retro feel with those names back in the top flight.
The early fixtures matter for the betting picture. Without Madrid or Barcelona in action, there's real opportunity to watch mid-table and newly promoted sides establish their early-season patterns before the big clubs distort the table. Villarreal under Iñigo Pérez and a José Mourinho-managed side are arguably the most interesting storylines of the opening round.
Madrid and Barcelona will catch up. They always do. But this weekend belongs to everyone else.
