Wrexham broke their transfer record on Monday. They're already trying to break it again. The Red Dragons have had two bids rejected by Viking FK for Norwegian center back Henrik Falchener, with their latest offer reaching a potential $10.9 million — a fraction above the $10.8 million they just spent on Sunderland goalkeeper Anthony Patterson.
Viking aren't selling easily. They've got good reason to hold firm: they're currently second in the Eliteserien with a game in hand on leaders Bodø/Glimt, and they face Dinamo Zagreb in a Champions League playoff this week. Losing their starting center back mid-campaign — a player who has made 17 appearances already this season — would be a serious blow to any team with European ambitions, let alone one chasing history.
What Falchener actually brings
The 23-year-old isn't just a defensive body to fill a gap. He scored six goals from center back during Viking's title-winning campaign last season — their first Eliteserien title in over 30 years — and has added two more this term. That kind of output from a center back is genuinely rare, and it's the kind of profile that changes how opponents set up against you.
Defensively, the numbers back up the eye test: 71.2% duel success rate, 75.3% in aerial duels, and he ranks highly for tackles and clearances. He's not a risk signing. He's a player who dominated a top Scandinavian division and earned Norway World Cup recognition off the back of it.
He started Norway's 4-1 defeat to France at Gillette Stadium and appeared as they reached the quarterfinals before going out to England. Two caps isn't a massive sample, but making a World Cup squad at 23 while playing your club football in Norway says something about the regard coaches have for him.
Why Wrexham need this to happen
Phil Parkinson has a real problem to solve. Wrexham conceded 65 goals in the Championship last season — seventh-worst in the division, and the most they've shipped in a campaign since dropping out of the Football League in 2008. Lewis Brunt is gone to Bolton. Conor Coady is available to leave. The backline that struggled for large stretches of last season is being rebuilt from scratch.
Falchener ticks the specific boxes Parkinson needs: left-sided center back who can also shift right, comfortable with the ball, and capable of contributing at both ends. His versatility alone makes him valuable in a Championship side that will need rotation across a 46-game season.
- Full name: Henrik Sælebakke Falchener
- Date of birth: May 8, 2003 (age 23)
- Position: Center back
- Current club: Viking FK
- International: Norway (2 caps, 2026 World Cup squad)
- Reported fee: $10.9 million
Two bids already rejected. A third is presumably coming. The question is whether Wrexham can find a number that moves Viking before the window closes — and whether Viking, with a Champions League playoff to navigate, have any appetite to let it happen at all.
