Xabi Alonso isn't buying the narrative that Estevao Willian wants out of Chelsea. Reports from Brazil last week suggested the 19-year-old was already weighing up a January exit if his playing time didn't improve. Alonso's response was firm: "Este is ready. He's training well... he's fully involved and with a very good attitude every day."
That's the manager talking. Now look at the numbers. Sixteen minutes of Premier League football across three games. Two appearances. Cole Palmer and Morgan Rogers ahead of him on the wing. For a player who arrived with genuine excitement around him, that's a slow start by any measure.
Patient words, but the situation is real
Alonso acknowledged private conversations with the Brazilian but kept the details exactly that — private. "The season is going to be long," he said, which is true, but also exactly what managers say when a player is frustrated and they'd rather not escalate it publicly.
The Carabao Cup third-round tie against Leeds looks set to be Estevao's chance to make something happen from the start. Cup games are where fringe players either force their way into the picture or confirm the manager's doubts. If he performs, the conversation changes. If he doesn't, January will come up again regardless of what Alonso says now.
Chelsea's wing depth is genuinely strong, which is both the problem and the context. Estevao isn't being blocked by mediocrity — Palmer is one of the Premier League's best players, and Rogers has carried his pre-season form into the campaign. Breaking that hierarchy takes more than good training sessions.
Barco in a similar position
Estevao isn't the only one waiting his turn. Valentin Barco, the Argentine signed from Strasbourg last summer, is also expected to start against Leeds having seen minimal action so far. Alonso spoke positively about Barco's adjustment to English football but was measured — "still early days" — which suggests neither player should expect a sudden change in the league rotation.
Moises Caicedo, Jordan Henderson, Marco Palestra and Emmanuel Emegha are all unavailable through injury for the Leeds cup tie. The squad depth is being tested, and that does open a window for players like Estevao and Barco. Whether they use it is another matter entirely.
"Este is part of it," Alonso said of the squad's collective mentality. That's reassuring. It's also not the same as a guaranteed starting spot.
