Messi Arrives in Oviedo to Huge Welcome Ahead of Royal Dinner and Prestigious Award.

Lionel Messi arrived in Oviedo on Thursday to an enthusiastic reception from fans, with crowds gathering outside the historic Hotel de la Reconquista where he is staying. The Argentine, who was accompanied by his wife Antonela Roccuzzo, is in Spain to receive the 2026 Princess of Asturias Award for Sports, one of the country's most prestigious honours.

According to Spanish media reports, Messi is expected to attend an official dinner on Thursday evening with King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia. The dinner, to be held at the Hotel de la Reconquista, will bring together members of the Spanish royal family and this year's Princess of Asturias Award recipients.

Messi spent much of his career in Spain with Barcelona, where he became one of the greatest players in football history and won numerous major trophies before moving to Paris Saint-Germain in 2021. He currently plays for Inter Miami in Major League Soccer.

Why Messi is receiving the award

The Princess of Asturias Foundation announced Messi as the winner of its 2026 Sports Award on June 3. The jury recognised his extraordinary football career, his consistency, humility, exemplary behaviour on the pitch and his commitment to teamwork. Organisers also highlighted his charitable work, particularly his efforts to improve access to education and healthcare for disadvantaged children.

What is the Princess of Asturias Award

The Princess of Asturias Awards, established in 1981, are among Spain's most prestigious honours, recognising outstanding contributions across sport, science, literature, the arts and other fields. The Sports category was introduced in 1987, with British athlete Sebastian Coe becoming its first recipient. Past winners have included Michael Schumacher, Rafael Nadal, Serena Williams, Iker Casillas and Xavi Hernandez.

Unlike the Ballon d'Or, which primarily recognises footballing excellence, the Princess of Asturias Award for Sports celebrates an athlete's wider contribution to sport and society. As part of the honour, Messi will receive a sculpture designed by Spanish artist Joan Miro, a diploma, an insignia and 50,000 euros in prize money.
