Valencia are reportedly closing in on Javier Aguirre as their next head coach, with talks said to be progressing toward an agreement following the sacking of Carlos Corberan last week.
The Mexican has been in discussions with the club for several days, and according to reports, new sporting director Braulio Vazquez sees him as his preferred candidate because of his experience and extensive knowledge of LaLiga. Vazquez himself only joined Valencia from Osasuna last week.
Ernesto Valverde and Jagoba Arrasate had previously been linked with the vacancy after Corberan's departure, which came following a poor start to the 2026-27 season. But Aguirre has now emerged as the main candidate.
Record Mexico reports that Aguirre is receptive to the move and keen to return to Spanish club football after leaving the Mexico national team following the 2026 World Cup. Several outlets suggest negotiations have advanced and may be nearing a deal, though contractual details are still being worked out.
A Club in Need of Stability
Valencia remain one of Spain's most decorated clubs, with six LaLiga titles and eight Copa del Rey trophies to their name, ranking fifth all-time in major Spanish domestic honours. But those glory days feel distant at Mestalla these days, with recent seasons spent fighting to avoid relegation and growing frustration among supporters over what they see as a lack of investment from owner Peter Lim.
Should the move go through, Aguirre would be taking charge of his seventh different LaLiga club, having previously managed Osasuna, Atletico Madrid, Real Zaragoza, Espanyol, Leganes and Mallorca.
