"The No. 39 gave me everything in life. It fed me, clothed me and paid for three-hour bus rides to pursue my dream." Bruno Guimarães said that in 2023, and it explains everything about why Arsenal's marquee summer signing won't be negotiating over squad numbers.
The digits trace back to his father's taxi cab in Rio de Janeiro — dispatch number 039. Growing up, Guimarães watched his father grind through the city from dusk to dawn, the only real break being Saturday afternoons watching his son play on dusty pitches. It shaped him entirely.
At one point, a teenage Guimarães was so uncertain about a football future that he got his driver's license — genuinely preparing to follow his father into the cab trade. Then a 2017 loan to Athletico Paranaense changed everything. His father called and asked him to take No. 39. By the time he did, the number had already been assigned to him randomly. They both broke down in tears.
From Lyon to Newcastle to the Emirates
He's worn 39 everywhere since — Lyon, Newcastle — and had it tattooed on his right calf. This isn't a preference. It's non-negotiable.
Fortunately for everyone involved, no one at Arsenal currently holds the shirt. The most recent occupant was academy midfielder Harrison Dudziak, who made one senior matchday squad appearance before being released this summer. Before him, Héctor Bellerín cycled through it on his way down from 40 to his eventual No. 2. Francis Coquelin wore it for his Premier League debut — the 8-2 demolition by Manchester United in 2011 that, of all things, prompted Arsenal to sign a certain Mikel Arteta. Coquelin dropped the number immediately after.
Guimarães will be comfortably the most prominent player to pull on that shirt at the Emirates. Whether Arsenal's title odds sharpen or stall this season will depend far more on what he does in it than what number is on the back.
