"We were not expecting to have this great news at this moment," Xabi Alonso said after Chelsea's preseason friendly against Tottenham. That tells you everything about where Mykhailo Mudryk sits in the new manager's plans. A welcome surprise. Not a cornerstone.
Mudryk hasn't played a single minute of professional football since November 28, 2024. A positive test for Meldonium — a substance that aids recovery and endurance rather than raw performance — earned him an initial four-year ban from the FA. What changed his situation was a revision to WADA's technical guidelines: the concentration found in his sample would no longer constitute a positive test under the updated rules. The FA, WADA, and Mudryk reached an agreement, and now he's in Hong Kong with Chelsea for preseason, almost 20 months after his last appearance.
A very different Chelsea waiting for him
The club Mudryk left barely resembles the one he's returned to. Enzo Maresca is gone. So are Jadon Sancho and João Félix, the wingers he was competing with when he last pulled on the shirt. Even Alejandro Garnacho came and went during the suspension. The left flank now belongs — or is expected to — to Jamie Gittens and record signing Morgan Rogers.
That's a steep hill. Mudryk managed 10 goals in 73 appearances before the ban, good enough to flash his ability but never enough to nail down a starting spot. After 20 months of solo training, expecting him to immediately challenge for minutes ahead of two players who've had a full preseason with Alonso would be generous thinking.
Alonso was warm but measured in his assessment. He recalled watching Mudryk tear apart opposition at Shakhtar — the pace, the directness, the one-on-one quality — and acknowledged the talent is real. "He's a special player, but it will take time for sure," he said. That caveat is doing a lot of work.
Loan move looks the most logical path
Three Premier League clubs have already made inquiries, including Frank Lampard's newly-promoted Coventry City. Chelsea selling outright makes little sense — his market value has never been lower, and offloading him at a loss on a £89 million investment would be hard to justify to ownership. A loan, though, is a different conversation entirely.
Getting Mudryk consistent minutes somewhere — whether that's a Premier League relegation battler or Chelsea's sister club Strasbourg in Ligue 1 — would serve everyone. It rebuilds his match sharpness, restores his value, and frees up squad space for Alonso to operate without a winger in rehabilitation taking up a spot. From a purely practical standpoint, it's the cleanest outcome.
The 25-year-old will get his chance to make an impression during preseason. But with Rogers already embedded as a priority signing and Gittens pushing for a breakthrough season, Mudryk is working against the clock from the moment he laces his boots.
