The club was built in Masazir, Azerbaijan, with the backing of Yagub Huseynov, founder of the Bridge Group real estate and investment conglomerate. This isn't grassroots. It's a well-capitalised modern football project that skipped the queue — one season in the First Division before receiving a Premier League license in May 2018 — and has been accelerating ever since.
The double that changed everything
Under manager Valdas Dambrauskas — who, in a detail that belongs in a documentary, used his winnings from the Lithuanian version of Who Wants to Be a Millionaire? in 2002 to fund a coaching badge in the UK — Sabah completed the Azerbaijan Premier League and Cup double in the 2025-26 season. They then knocked out Hapoel Be'er Sheva in the play-offs to secure a place in the UCL league phase for the first time in the club's short history.
They play at the 9,000-capacity Bank Respublika Arena and have steadily recruited foreign coaches and international players throughout their rise. The infrastructure is there. So is the ambition.
Sabah are one of four newcomers in the league phase alongside Viking Stavanger, LASK, and Como. As a Pot 4 side, they'll face eight opponents across the league phase — and given their profile, the odds on them collecting points against Europe's giants will be long. That's not necessarily unfair. This is genuinely uncharted water for a club that didn't exist when Lionel Messi won his first Ballon d'Or.
What to expect from the 'Owls'
Sabah are often described as one of Azerbaijan's better-funded clubs, though they're not viewed on the same state-backed scale as Qarabag. The distinction matters — this is private money with a clear sporting vision, not an indefinite blank cheque. Whether that model sustains Champions League football beyond one campaign is the real question their performance in Monaco's draw will start to answer.
