"The World Cup was the best thing that happened in my life, in terms of football, but it's in the past." That's Vozinha, 40 years old, standing in front of the Chilean press after his first Colo-Colo training session — already moving on.
The Cape Verde goalkeeper who held Spain to a clean sheet and made eight saves in an extra-time defeat to Argentina at this summer's World Cup has landed at one of South America's most storied clubs. For a man who spent his career bouncing between Portugal, Cyprus, and Slovakia, this is a different level of spotlight entirely.
29.5 million followers walking through the door
Here's the scale of what Colo-Colo just signed: the club has 2.8 million Instagram followers. Vozinha has 29.5 million. The man is bigger than the institution right now — at least on social media — and the club knows it, hoping his arrival shifts shirts and shifts momentum toward a Copa Libertadores return. They last won South America's premier club competition in 1991.
Colo-Colo currently leads the Chilean Primera División by 12 points after 17 matches, so the pressure isn't about keeping the lights on. It's about building toward something bigger. A goalkeeper who kept Argentina's attack at bay for 120 minutes is at least worth the gamble on that front — Colo-Colo's backline odds in tight knockout situations just got a credible upgrade.
His debut could come as early as August 9 away at Union La Calera, or at home against O'Higgins a week later in front of 47,000 at the Estadio Monumental. Either way, the reception has already been warm — thousands showed up at the airport.
What about Maureira?
The reasonable concern around this signing is 19-year-old Chilean keeper Gabriel Maureira, who had been getting real minutes before Vozinha arrived. Sporting director Daniel Moron gave the diplomatic answer — "the best thing we can do for Gabriel Maureira is bring in people at a high level" — but the reality is a 40-year-old World Cup overnight sensation doesn't fly in to sit on the bench.
Vozinha's real name is Josimar José Évora Dias. Colo-Colo had to win an exemption from the Chilean federation just to put "Vozinha" on his shirt. That's not a club easing a veteran in quietly — that's a club building a story around a player they expect to start.
"I'm going to keep being myself, keep working and dignifying soccer," he said. For a keeper who went from Slovakian football to 29 million followers in the space of a tournament, that's probably the right attitude to carry into Santiago.
