Patrick Mahomes has three Super Bowl rings to his name, but away from the field, he and his wife Brittany have been building something that could end up outlasting his playing career entirely. The couple now holds ownership stakes in the Kansas City Royals (MLB), Sporting Kansas City (MLS), the Kansas City Current (NWSL) and the Alpine F1 team, a spread that makes them one of the more strategically invested athlete-couples in American sports.
Patrick joined the Royals' ownership group in 2020, becoming the youngest owner in MLB history at the time. He expanded into soccer a year later by joining the Sporting Kansas City ownership group, and later became part of the Alpine Racing Team in Formula One.
The Kansas City Current Was Brittany's Idea First
The most telling piece of the puzzle is the Kansas City Current. Brittany, a former collegiate soccer player at the University of Texas at Tyler, co-founded the NWSL club back in 2020, with Patrick coming on board as a co-owner a few years later. When the ownership group set out to bring an NWSL franchise back to Kansas City, building a stadium dedicated specifically to women's professional sports was central to the plan from the start.
That vision became CPKC Stadium, which opened in March 2024 on the banks of the Missouri River at a cost of nearly $120 million. It was the first stadium in NWSL history built expressly for a women's soccer team. The bet has paid off in a big way: the Current's valuation climbed from $75 million in 2024 to $325 million by 2026, and the club now leads the NWSL in annual revenue at $36 million.
"We are so thrilled to make this a family affair and have Patrick join as an owner," Brittany said when Patrick came on as co-owner. "He has been a huge supporter behind the scenes. His passion for the Current is undeniable."
Why Kansas City, Specifically?
Most NFL stars spread their investments across different markets chasing returns wherever they can find them. Mahomes has gone the other way, anchoring nearly everything he does off the field in one city. Forbes estimates his off-field earnings at $30 million in 2026, more than double the next-highest NFL player.
When he joined Sporting KC in 2021, Mahomes said, "Sporting is a community-oriented club, and I am excited to continue supporting the growth of soccer in Kansas City." That same framing shows up whenever he discusses these ventures. It doesn't sound like someone chasing spreadsheets. It sounds like someone putting down roots.
"I want to play for a long time but you can't play forever, but I always want to be involved in sports in some way," Mahomes said in a 2021 interview. The planned expansion of CPKC Stadium, growing from 11,500 seats to 18,000 alongside retail and infrastructure development in the Berkley Riverfront district, suggests this is as much an urban development play as it is a sports investment.
CPKC Stadium is jointly owned by the Mahomes couple and Chris and Angie Long. In a joint statement, the owners said, "In the soccer capital of America, we are building the world's best women's soccer club." Given the numbers since the stadium opened, that claim has had some backing behind it.
