"I don't want to break bad news, but Messi's father just died." That sentence, broadcast live on Luzu TV's El Show del Verano, ended Argentine presenter Florencia Pena's World Cup — and her job.

Pena made the false claim after Lionel Messi appeared visibly emotional following the first of his three goals against Algeria. She then compounded it by adding that Messi would "have to leave" Argentina's World Cup defense. None of it was true. Jorge Messi is alive, currently under medical observation but — per the family's own statement — "recovering and progressing favorably."

A family dealing with enough already

The Messi family's statement was measured but pointed. "At times like these, we ask for responsibility, prudence and humanity," they wrote. "A person's health and the peace of mind of their loved ones should not be the subject of speculation or irresponsible media interest."

That's the part that stings. Jorge Messi is genuinely unwell. The family is managing a real health situation in the background of a World Cup campaign, and a live television program decided to turn it into breaking news without a single confirmed fact.

Pena later said she was "deeply ashamed" and that the false information had been fed to her during the broadcast by the production team. She accepted responsibility anyway. "I take responsibility for being part of the mistake, and that's why I decided to step aside." Luzu TV followed up by parting ways with everyone involved and issuing their own apology for "broadcasting sensitive information without proper prior verification."

Argentina press on regardless

On the pitch, none of this derails Argentina. The defending champions top Group J on goal difference over Austria, and a win on June 22 at AT&T Stadium in Dallas clinches progression to the knockout rounds. Even a draw could be enough — the top eight third-place finishers advance — so Scaloni's side have real breathing room.

Messi, for his part, delivered a hat-trick against Algeria. Whatever he's carrying privately, it didn't show in his football. His odds of winning a second consecutive World Cup golden boot are looking very healthy right now — which is more than can be said for the television career of his accidental eulogist.
