"I watched you suffer, fall, and get back up." Antonela Roccuzzo's Instagram post says more about Messi's international career than any statistic could — and there are plenty of statistics.
Lionel Messi has retired from international football. The announcement, written two days after Argentina's 0-1 loss to Spain in the 2026 World Cup final and finalised following the death of his father, Jorge, draws the curtain on a 20-year run that produced 124 goals in 203 appearances — numbers that don't exist anywhere else in the game's history.

Roccuzzo's tribute wasn't the usual polished PR post. It was specific, personal, and honest about the difficulty of the journey. "So many years, so many moments, so much joy — and so many setbacks, too," she wrote. "I watched you keep going when things didn't go your way and always try again."
The part that landed hardest: their three children growing up watching it all firsthand. "Perhaps one day they will truly understand the magnitude of your story. Today, they are simply proud of their dad." That's the kind of line that earns its emotion.
Messi's own statement was equally raw. He confirmed he'd written the initial draft on July 21, two days after the final, and that his father's death only reinforced the decision. "There is not much time left, and different chapters are coming to an end. This is one that hurts me a lot."
