David Owori is gone. The SC Villa captain and Uganda international — 28 years old — died after being attacked by unidentified assailants in a suburb of Kampala on Tuesday. Passers-by found him unconscious on the street and rushed him to hospital. He didn't make it.
Police spokesperson Racheal Kawala confirmed the death. No suspects have been named. The attackers remain unidentified.
A captain the country didn't want to lose
SC Villa are one of Uganda's biggest clubs, and Owori was their leader — on the pitch and off it. The Federation of Uganda Football Associations didn't reach for generic condolences. Their statement landed harder than most: "He led with courage, humility and passion. In the Uganda Cranes jersey, he carried the hopes of a nation."
That's not ceremonial language. Uganda's national team qualification campaigns lean heavily on their domestic core, and losing a captain-calibre presence affects more than one club. The Cranes' squad depth and leadership structure just took a real hit.
The outrage across Uganda has been sharp and justified. Owori's death is the second high-profile sports figure killed in Kampala this year. Rugby player Sydney Gongodyo died in June after being attacked by a mob who apparently mistook him for a thief. Two athletes. Two months apart. Both killed in the capital.
Deputy Speaker Thomas Tayebwa has called on authorities to address the country's security situation. The National Council of Sports Uganda — the state body — was blunt: "Ugandan sport has been hit with many such tragedies lately, and we hope for justice and a lasting solution."
Hope for justice is a thin comfort right now. Owori was 28, at the height of his career, and he was found unconscious on a pavement in a city where crime has overwhelmed the authorities' capacity to respond. His killers haven't been found.
