Wrexham have announced that director Humphrey Ker is stepping down from the club's board and as a trustee of its foundation, ending a five-year association with the Championship side. The news was confirmed in a statement released on Friday, as reported by Wales Online.
Ker, an actor and comedian, was the man who helped bring co-owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney to Wrexham back in 2021, having encouraged McElhenney to pursue football ownership before pointing him towards the Welsh club. Since then, the trio have overseen a rise from non-league football to a side now pushing for promotion to the top flight.
"Wrexham AFC confirm that Humphrey Ker is to step down from the board of Wrexham AFC and as a trustee of the Wrexham AFC Foundation after a highly successful five-year-long association with the Club," the statement read. "Humphrey played a crucial role in bringing Co-chairmen Rob Mac and Ryan Reynolds to the Club back in 2021 as it transitioned from the Wrexham Supporters Trust to the new ownership."
The club also credited Ker's role in front of the cameras, noting he "featured throughout the Welcome to Wrexham documentary series, which has proved to be an incredible success and has helped elevate both the Club and the City of Wrexham to global recognition." The statement added that Ker "has been an integral part of the growth of the Club these past five years and has shared at close hand the three consecutive promotions and our journey from the National League to the Championship."
Wrexham thanked Ker "for his dedication and commitment to the Club, the Foundation and to the local community" and wished him well for his future.
Ker's Own Words
In his own statement, Ker reflected on his time at the club. "Working for and representing Wrexham AFC and the wider town has been the greatest honor of my life," he said. "I am proud of the part I have played in the Club's remarkable journey, both on and off the field. The way the Club has evolved and is now structured has made it progressively harder for me to make a positive contribution so, sad as I am to be leaving, I now feel watching from a distance is the right thing for me."
He added: "I will always be a fan and wish the Club, the community and supporters every success. To everyone who has made me feel so welcome, thank you from the bottom of my heart."
Reynolds and McElhenney offered a brief but warm tribute of their own. "Humphrey has been a key piece of the Wrexham story from day one and his kindness, humor and height will be missed but never forgotten," the pair said jointly, a nod to Ker's 6ft 7in frame.
Timing Alongside Nickson Appointment
Ker's departure comes fewer than three weeks after Wrexham announced the hiring of former Newcastle United executive Steve Nickson as the club's new sporting director. Nickson, who spent 15 years at Newcastle and had served as head of recruitment there since 2017 after 12 years at Blackburn Rovers, has been brought in to work closely with head coach Phil Parkinson and his coaching staff as Wrexham chase promotion to the Premier League this season.
