Sam Coffey had knee surgery this week, Manchester City confirmed Friday. The USWNT's first-choice defensive midfielder is out for the United States' upcoming matches in Brazil — and the club is keeping tight-lipped on how serious the procedure actually was.
Manchester City described it as "minor," which is the kind of word clubs use when they want you to stay calm. No timeline was given beyond a summer of rehabilitation ahead of what promises to be a crowded season. That vagueness is worth watching.
Why this matters beyond June
The USWNT was set to face Brazil — host of the 2027 World Cup — in a two-game away series in early June. Losing Coffey for that trip stings. These aren't throwaway friendlies. Playing in Brazil, in front of Brazilian crowds, ahead of a World Cup cycle is exactly the kind of environment the USWNT needs its leaders running the middle of the pitch.
And Coffey is very much a leader now. She's 27, has 46 caps, scored five international goals, and was the starting defensive midfielder when the US won Olympic gold in Paris last summer. She didn't inherit that role — she earned it, and she's held it.
World Cup qualifying kicks off in November. That's the real deadline. If Coffey is fit and sharp by then, the summer setback becomes a footnote. If the recovery drags or complications emerge, the USWNT's midfield depth gets tested in a cycle where getting it wrong has consequences.
Manchester City's European push is in the picture too
Coffey only joined City in January — a transfer from Portland Thorns that cost $875,000 — and played 10 matches across all competitions before the injury. She arrived to a team that just won the WSL title for the first time in a decade, and the club qualifies directly into the 2026-27 UEFA Women's Champions League as English champions.
That's the campaign City signed Coffey to influence. Director of football Therese Sjögran said in January that Coffey's reputation as "one of the world's best speaks for itself." She's got all summer to prove the knee doesn't change that picture.
