"There's no player that's scored more goals in the last 15 years in the top five leagues than Robert Lewandowski." That's Gregg Berhalter — the Chicago Fire's director of football and head coach — not just floating a name, but confirming Lewandowski, 37, was en route to tour their training ground on Saturday morning.
This isn't a wishlist item anymore. According to The Athletic, Lewandowski spent the entire weekend in Chicago. He's weighing proposals from the Fire alongside interest from the Saudi Pro League, with a decision expected soon.
What Chicago is actually buying here
Lewandowski left Barcelona last month after four seasons and three LaLiga titles. Before that, eight years at Bayern Munich from 2014 to 2022 — one of the most prolific striker runs European football has seen in a generation. The goals didn't slow down in Spain either. At 37, he's not coasting.
The Fire are third in the Eastern Conference, sitting behind Nashville SC and Inter Miami CF, with a goal differential of +11. The bones are there. They haven't won an MLS Cup since 1998, and Berhalter is clearly building toward something more than a playoff appearance.
The Messi comparison Berhalter made will raise eyebrows, but there's logic buried in it. Messi arrived at Inter Miami in July 2023 and has since won back-to-back MLS MVP and MLS Cup MVP awards, leading Miami to their first ever MLS Cup title. The league has proven it can still get meaningful production from elite players past their European peak. Chicago is betting Lewandowski follows the same arc.
The betting picture shifts with this one
If Lewandowski signs, Eastern Conference title odds for Chicago deserve a second look. A striker of his caliber changes how opponents defend against the Fire entirely — and adds the kind of goal threat that makes a +11 differential look conservative. MLS Cup futures on Chicago will likely tighten fast once this is confirmed.
Saudi or Chicago. Lewandowski is making a decision soon. The Fire are taking it seriously enough to get him on-site — that alone tells you where this is heading.
