The tip that United buried
It started in the south of France in 2015, when a stranger named Lionel approached Giggs outside a hotel and told him to watch a teenager at Monaco named Kylian Mbappé. Giggs didn't ignore it. He followed up, got the details by email, roped in fellow assistant Albert, and the pair went to watch Mbappé in youth games. The verdict from both of them was immediate.
"Wow, what is this?" as Giggs put it. "You can see players and they can be special, but he did look exceptional."
So they escalated it. United's scouting team were sent to Paris to watch Mbappé play for Monaco against PSG. Weeks later, Giggs got his update: not convinced, moving on. The conversation ended there.
