NWSL Is Reshaping Its 2027 Calendar Around the Women's World Cup.

The NWSL is moving its entire 2027 season structure to accommodate the Women's World Cup in Brazil — and the league is leaning into it hard, not just working around it.

Commissioner Jessica Berman laid out the schedule in a midseason State of the League address Wednesday: the season opens February 11, more than a month earlier than 2025's start. The Challenge Cup kicks things off on February 6. The league then pauses from June 24 to July 25 for the World Cup, before resuming toward a November 5 playoff start and a championship on November 20.

Super Bowl weekend isn't an accident

Launching during Super Bowl weekend is a deliberate play, not a scheduling quirk. ABC — which broadcasts both the Super Bowl and NWSL matches — is the same partner for both events in 2027, and Berman said the league is "working closely with ESPN to make sure that the NWSL is woven into the weekend stories." That kind of shared broadcast real estate is genuinely rare, and the league knows it.

The strategic logic is sound. Major tournaments drive interest. The NWSL wants to be the destination before and after the World Cup, not a footnote to it. "We know that major tournaments inspire millions of people to follow the sport, and our schedule allows us to be part of the lead-in and the lead-out of that big moment," Berman said.

There's early evidence that approach is already working. The league's "Summer of Soccer" campaign — designed to ride the coattails of this summer's men's World Cup — generated nearly 40 million social media impressions. Average attendance sits at 11,174 per game, second only to 2024's 11,249 average. The league thinks it can beat that number before the season ends.

The MLS calendar shift actually helps

MLS is flipping to a summer-to-spring calendar next year, which sounds like a complication given how many teams share stadiums with NWSL clubs. But Berman sees an upside: the two leagues currently clog each other's playoff windows with uncertainty. On different calendars, that problem largely disappears. "We're going to have visibility into weeks that might otherwise have been reserved but not confirmed," she said.

There's also a longer question hanging over the NWSL — whether it eventually aligns its season with European leagues. The players' union has pushed back on that, and the league is locked into a spring-to-fall model through at least 2030. For now, the 2027 calendar is the priority, and it's built around one thing: making the World Cup moment as big for the NWSL as possible, before and after the whistle blows in Brazil.
