Saudi Arabia's seven-year grip on the Spanish Super Cup is about to loosen — at least temporarily. With Riyadh committed to hosting the 2027 Asian Cup, the Spanish Football Federation is hunting for a new venue, and Miami has jumped to the front of the queue.
Istanbul and Qatar are also in the frame, but Miami is currently the favourite ahead of a decision by the federation's executive committee next Thursday. Qatar, despite its obvious logistical familiarity with hosting football, is considered the least likely of the three options.
The Saudi sabbatical — and what fills the gap
The Super Cup has been played outside Spain in every year since 2018, bar 2021 when Morocco stepped in during the COVID disruption. From there it settled into Saudi Arabia — Jeddah and Riyadh sharing hosting duties for seven straight editions under a deal that technically runs to 2030. The 2027 edition is effectively a one-year carve-out, not a permanent shift.
Miami had been floated as a venue for the Women's Spanish Super Cup before federation president Rafael Louzán shut it down after a participating club objected. The men's version is a different conversation entirely — bigger commercial pull, bigger clubs, and a North American football market that LaLiga has been aggressively courting for years.
The four-team draw and what it means
The 43rd edition of the competition will use the established Final Four format. The semifinal pairings are already set:
- Real Sociedad vs. Real Madrid (Copa del Rey winners vs. LaLiga runners-up)
- Barcelona vs. Atlético de Madrid (LaLiga champions vs. Copa del Rey runners-up)
Barcelona go in as the competition's most decorated club with 16 titles. Real Madrid sit second on 13. For Madrid, the Super Cup has become one of the cleaner paths to silverware in seasons where the title race slips away — and with Barcelona's domestic form in 2024-25, that gap at the top of the all-time list isn't closing any time soon.
Atlético have won it twice. Real Sociedad once. On paper, the bracket suits the big two reaching the final, which is exactly what broadcasters and sponsors in a potential Miami market will be hoping for.
The federation meets Thursday. Miami's case — prime February scheduling, a large Spanish-speaking fanbase, and LaLiga's existing commercial infrastructure in the US — is strong. Whether the clubs ultimately travel to Florida, Istanbul, or Doha, the tournament is expected in February 2027.
