Inter Milan have drawn the line on Alessandro Bastoni: €70 million, no exceptions. Barcelona looked, did the math, and walked away. Now the question is whether José Mourinho can convince Real Madrid to do what Barça couldn't.
Bastoni, 27, is one of the best left-footed center backs in Europe. Three Serie A titles, a Euro 2020 winner's medal, and another league championship this season under Cristian Chivu — his CV speaks for itself. Mourinho, who knows Serie A intimately, is reportedly a genuine admirer and has placed him on his defensive shortlist as he prepares his Real Madrid project.
Why Barcelona were never really in the race
Barcelona's interest was real but never serious. Inter made their valuation public early — roughly $80 million — and the Catalans were never in a financial position to match it. No formal bid was submitted. The flirtation ended before it began.
That's not a knock on Bastoni. It's a reflection of where Barcelona sit financially and where Inter stand on this player. He's under contract until June 2028 at €5.5 million per year. Inter have zero pressure to sell. They're negotiating from strength.
Real Madrid are a different proposition entirely. The two clubs are already in active contact over Denzel Dumfries, whose €20 million release clause is active in July. Florentino Pérez and Inter president Beppe Marotta reportedly used a recent charity match at the Bernabéu as an opportunity for informal talks. It's not hard to imagine Bastoni coming up in those conversations.
What €70m actually buys you
At that price, Real Madrid would be getting a defender in his prime, not a project. Bastoni is already the finished article — positionally smart, composed on the ball, and built for the kind of high-line defensive structure elite clubs run. For a side that's been reshaping its backline, that profile carries real value.
The only noise around him this season came from a red card controversy involving Pierre Kalulu in a Juventus match and some scrutiny of Bastoni's reaction. Inter's dressing room and leadership closed ranks around him immediately. That kind of institutional loyalty usually means a player is going nowhere cheap.
- Bastoni's contract runs until June 2028
- Inter's asking price: €70 million (~$80 million)
- Annual salary: €5.5 million (~$6.3 million)
- Barcelona made no formal offer
- Real Madrid and Inter already in talks over Dumfries (€20m clause)
If Mourinho gets the green light and Madrid meet the asking price, Inter would find it difficult to say no to a clean, full-value deal. The player, despite being settled and valued in Milan, would face an equally difficult decision. Real Madrid's defensive odds just got a lot more interesting — depending on how this summer plays out.
Inter's message is already out there: there are no discounts on Bastoni.
