"My energy is now completely depleted." That's Marc Overmars, writing directly to Royal Antwerp supporters on Wednesday — and there's no reading between the lines there. The 51-year-old is stepping down as sports director, and his doctors have apparently made the stakes very clear.
"If I do not listen to my body now, my doctors say there is a very high risk of things ending badly." That's not a man leaving for a better offer. That's a man being told to stop.

Overmars suffered a mild stroke in December 2022 — just months after joining Antwerp following his abrupt departure from Ajax, where he resigned in 2022 after sending inappropriate messages to female colleagues. He apologized, but his reputation never fully recovered the shine of his playing days with Netherlands, Arsenal, Barcelona and Ajax.
He spent nearly a decade as Ajax's director of football before that controversy ended it. Antwerp gave him a second act in management. Now the curtain's coming down for different reasons entirely.
In his letter, he cited "all the fatigue that has built up over the years and the enormous amount of stress" — language that suggests this isn't a short-term break but a genuine reckoning with what the job costs him physically.
What this means for Antwerp
Antwerp aren't a side that can absorb this quietly. They've been building genuine ambitions in Belgian football, and losing the man responsible for recruitment and sporting strategy mid-project creates real uncertainty. Whoever inherits this role needs time to settle — time that rival clubs will be happy to exploit.
From a betting standpoint, Antwerp's title and European qualification odds deserve a second look. Front-office stability matters, especially for clubs still consolidating at the top of the Belgian pyramid. A leadership vacuum in recruitment can take a full season to show its damage.
