Ronald Donkor's mother couldn't hold back her emotions after learning her son had earned his first call-up to Ghana's senior national team. A video circulating online shows her dancing and praising God while wearing her son's jersey, celebrating what she called a major milestone in his young career.
The 21-year-old New York Red Bulls midfielder was named in head coach Carlos Queiroz's 24-man squad for Ghana's upcoming 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers and an international friendly against Morocco. Donkor is one of two players receiving a maiden senior call-up under Queiroz, alongside Jan Gyamerah.
A Breakout MLS Season
The call-up comes on the back of an impressive campaign in Major League Soccer. Donkor has been directly involved in six goals this season, with two goals and four assists across competitions. He's made 23 MLS appearances, starting every single one.
Donkor's journey to this point began at JMG Football Academy in Mali before he moved through Guidars FC and eventually joined the Red Bulls in 2023.
What's Next for Ghana
Ghana open their AFCON qualifying campaign against Côte d'Ivoire in Bouaké on September 24, before facing The Gambia in Accra and Morocco in a friendly on October 4, 2026.
