Gavi Snubs Manchester United: Barcelona Midfielder Isn't Going Anywhere.

Gavi didn't need long to think about it. Manchester United came calling, were reportedly willing to pay Barcelona's £35 million asking price, and the Spanish World Cup winner said no.

United manager Michael Carrick had flagged the 22-year-old as his top midfield target this summer. The money was there. The intent was there. What wasn't there was any interest from Gavi, who has made clear he's staying in Catalonia — contracted at the Nou Camp until 2030 and with manager Hansi Flick firmly in his corner.

A summer that keeps getting worse at Old Trafford

United's summer spending sits at £85 million — Youri Tielemans and Chelsea castoff Andrey Santos — while their rivals have been investing heavily across the board. Losing Rasmus Hojlund and Casemiro, with Radek Vitek and Altay Bayindir also moving on, means the squad is thinner than it was 12 months ago. Karl Darlow arriving on a free doesn't offset that.

Carrick now needs a third midfielder, and the clock is ticking. Any team that price United into their odds as top-four contenders should be reassessing that position right now.

Gavi's relationship with Flick makes the whole thing even less complicated. "He's like a father to me. He blindly trusts me," Gavi said after returning from a serious knee injury that kept him out for five months last season. He came back, earned a Spain spot for the World Cup, and was on the bench as they beat Argentina 1-0 in the final in New York. That's the trajectory of someone who has no reason to leave.

What United do next

With 119 La Liga appearances since his debut in 2021 and his best years still ahead of him, Gavi was the kind of signing that could have shifted United's midfield from reactive to dynamic. Now Carrick has to find a Plan B — and probably a Plan C — before the window closes.

Gavi, meanwhile, stays exactly where he's always wanted to be.
