Marc-André ter Stegen is heading to Amsterdam. Barcelona have confirmed the 34-year-old German goalkeeper will join Ajax on a season-long loan for 2026-27 — his second loan spell in as many years, and arguably his last real shot at reclaiming relevance before his Camp Nou contract expires.
"When I first spoke with Jordi Cruijff, I immediately felt it was the right option," Ter Stegen said. That instinct makes sense. He already knows Ajax's new head coach Míchel from his ill-fated half-season loan at Girona, where a hamstring injury cut his time short after just two appearances. Same manager, more stable project — and a goalkeeper-sized hole in Ajax's squad to fill.
A career hollowed out by injury
The numbers from his Barcelona career are genuinely remarkable: 423 appearances, seven La Liga titles, a Champions League in 2015, 21 trophies in total. Barcelona noted he's the second-highest foreign appearance-maker in the club's history, behind only Messi. That's the career he had.
The career he has right now is a different story. Injuries began derailing him during the 2023-24 season, and he was sidelined for the better part of the following 18 months. He returned to Barcelona's bench in late 2025 — as backup. Then Girona, then another hamstring. Two appearances over a full loan spell. That's not a goalkeeper fighting his way back. That's someone fighting just to stay on the pitch.
He insists he's fit and ready. Ajax are betting on it.
Ajax's summer rebuild under Míchel
Three seasons without a trophy — finishing third, fifth, and second in the Eredivisie — have pushed Ajax into an unusually aggressive transfer window. Alongside Ter Stegen, they've brought in Julian Brandt and Daley Blind on free transfers, spent close to €20 million on striker Marcos Leonardo from Al-Hilal, added Monaco left back Caio Henrique for an undisclosed fee, and taken Wolves forward Tolu Arokodare on loan.
That's a squad overhaul, not a refresh. Ajax's Eredivisie title odds will be worth watching — this is a club that's decided patience is over.
As for Ter Stegen, Barcelona's statement stopped well short of a farewell, hinting he still has a future at the club with two years left on his deal. But at 34, with this injury record, that future depends entirely on what happens in Amsterdam. Cruijff put it plainly: "Marc has an outstanding track record." The question is whether any of it still applies.
