Chelsea have been charged by the Football Association following alleged discriminatory chanting from their own supporters during the club's 3-2 win at Fulham.
The trip to Craven Cottage came on the opening weekend of the 2026-27 Premier League season, with goals from João Pedro, Morgan Rogers and Cole Palmer giving Xabi Alonso, the former Real Madrid boss, a winning start in his new job. But the result has since been overshadowed by an FA charge relating to conduct in the crowd.
An FA spokesperson's statement, reported by The Mirror, read: "Chelsea FC has been charged with breaching FA Rule E21 during the ninth minute of its Premier League fixture against Fulham FC on 24 August. It's alleged that the club failed to ensure its spectators and/or supporters did not behave in an improper, offensive, abusive or insulting way. It's further alleged that this behavior was discriminatory in that it included a reference, whether express or implied, to religion or belief."
The charge follows an admission from Chelsea themselves in the immediate aftermath of the match. In an official communication sent to supporters the day after the game, the club confirmed it had received "multiple reports of sectarian chanting from a small portion" of those present at Craven Cottage.
Chelsea's Warning to Supporters
The club's statement to fans struck a firm tone, thanking supporters for their backing while making clear that discriminatory behaviour would not be tolerated. "The passion and backing from our fans are vital in achieving a successful season, and we encourage you to continue your vocal support for the team," it read. "Following the fixture, we have received multiple reports of sectarian chanting from a small portion of those in attendance at the match."
Chelsea went further, warning that anyone identified as taking part in such chanting could face serious sanctions. "We would like to strongly remind all supporters that the club does not condone any chants which discriminate against a protected characteristic. Any supporter found guilty of this will face the strongest possible action, which could include indefinite suspension from attending all Chelsea matches and ejection from the stadium."
The statement also referenced the club's history with this issue, noting: "Following previous club fines and charges for chants of this nature, and to ensure that we create a welcoming matchday experience for all, we ask supporters to take collective responsibility and remain vigilant in helping us tackle discriminatory chanting."
With the FA charge now formally confirmed, Chelsea will need to respond to the allegation that they failed to prevent the alleged chanting during the ninth minute of the fixture at Craven Cottage.
