Santiago Castrillon, 18, Dies After Collapsing on Pitch — Colombian Football Mourns.

Santiago Castrillon collapsed during a match, was rushed by ambulance to a high-complexity hospital in northern Bogota, treated in intensive care by cardiovascular specialists — and didn't make it. The Millonarios U-20 midfielder was 18 years old. He would have turned 19 in September.

His club's tribute cut through the usual formal language: "Santiago didn't just play football. He lived it, felt it, shared it with a smile that today remains etched in all of us." That kind of statement only lands when it's true.

A career that was just beginning to take shape

Castrillon was born in Bucaramanga and joined Millonarios in 2021, working his way through the academy while training regularly with the first team. Last October, he received his first official call-up for a BetPlay match against Atletico Bucaramanga — a milestone that, in hindsight, makes this loss even harder to absorb.

Luis Eduardo Pedraza, who coached him at Guayos FC before he made the move to Bogota, described a player defined by discipline and clarity of purpose. "Since he was a child he was always like that," Pedraza said — hardworking, humble, with a clear vision of where he was going.

He was going somewhere. That much was obvious.

Football in Colombia stops to pay its respects

Independiente Santa Fe — Millonarios' fiercest rivals — said it plainly: "Today football is in mourning." Their players prayed for Castrillon at the end of Saturday's fixture, before he had even passed. That image alone says everything about how the Colombian game has responded.

There is no competitive angle here worth drawing. No odds to reconsider, no squad depth question that matters right now. A teenager who trained with professionals and earned a first-team call-up at 18 is gone. The rest is secondary.

"Santiago, our dear teammate, rest in peace."
