"Work is being carried out around the clock in three shifts to meet the deadline." That's the pitch from Yassir Soussi, director at the national agency overseeing Morocco's 2030 World Cup stadium project — and right now, the numbers back it up.

Nine months into construction, the 115,000-seat venue near Casablanca is already 30% complete, with roughly 40% of the tribunes built. The target: fully finished by the end of 2027, leaving a cushion before the tournament kicks off in 2030.

The largest football stadium in the world — if it gets there

At 115,000 seats, this would overtake every existing football venue on the planet. The $1 billion project sits on a 150-hectare plot of farmland and forest near Casablanca, built by Moroccan firms TGCC and SGTM. New highways and a railway station connecting it to both Casablanca and Rabat are part of the plan — because a stadium that size needs serious infrastructure around it, not just inside it.

Architect Tarek Oualalou describes the design as a tent-roofed structure inspired by traditional Moroccan architecture, with enclosed botanical gardens meant to reflect the country's natural landscapes. "The goal is to deurbanise the football experience," he said. Whether that reads as visionary or overly ambitious depends on whether they hit that 2027 deadline.

Spain is the real competition

Morocco completing the stadium on time doesn't guarantee them the final. FIFA hasn't made that call yet, and co-hosts Spain — a nation with deep World Cup hosting experience and established elite venues — are pushing hard for the showpiece match. Portugal rounds out the three-nation hosting arrangement.

For anyone watching the 2030 host city markets, Morocco's progress is notable — but the final decision rests with FIFA, and Spain won't be giving that game up without a fight. Morocco is building the world's biggest stadium. Whether the world's biggest game ends up inside it is a separate question entirely.
