The 20-year-old Chicago Fire centre-back is heading to Finland for surgery on a thigh tear that has turned out to be significantly worse than the club first admitted. What looked like a two-month absence is now a minimum three-to-four month recovery, which means Mbokazi won't be back on a football pitch until December at the earliest. For practical purposes, his 2025 MLS season is finished.
Nottingham Forest interest goes cold
The timing is particularly costly. ESPN had reported preliminary interest from Nottingham Forest, plus clubs in Italy and Belgium. None of those conversations were at an advanced stage, but they were happening — and that matters for a 20-year-old left-footed centre-back who Chicago Fire paid around $3 million to sign from Orlando Pirates just last December on a four-year deal.
That kind of profile — young, left-footed, already drawing European attention in his debut MLS season — is exactly what drives transfer value upward. A summer move could have represented a serious return on investment for the Fire, and Gregg Berhalter had already confirmed the club would have listened to the right offer. Now there's nothing to listen to. Any interested club needs a player who can pass a medical, and Mbokazi can't.
Berhalter's response on Apple TV was measured: "It's really about the next person stepping up and being a team that's hard to score on. Closing the spaces, being compact." Fair enough in terms of squad management. But losing a first-choice centre-back to season-ending surgery mid-campaign is a real defensive problem for a Fire side that has never been mistaken for a defensive fortress. Their backline odds deserve a second look from anyone wagering on Chicago matches between now and the playoffs.
What happens next
The theoretical scenario where Chicago rushes Mbokazi through training in time for a November or December playoff run appears to have been quietly shelved. Sensible, given the surgery he's about to undergo. Pushing a 20-year-old back onto a pitch before he's ready to protect a playoff run would be exactly the kind of decision that defines the next four years of his career — badly.
The transfer conversation will almost certainly restart in January. Whether European clubs maintain interest after months away from the pitch is a different question entirely. "It's a minimum of 3-4 months recovery. There's no club that would take him if he can't pass a medical," Michaels said. That's the whole story in two sentences.
