Mark Hughes and Family 'Heartbroken' After Son Alex Dies Aged 38.

"Jill and I are totally heartbroken by the sudden and unexpected loss of our beloved son Alex." Those words, released through the League Managers Association by Mark Hughes and his wife, confirmed the death of Alex Hughes at the age of 38. No cause of death has been disclosed.

Alex leaves behind his wife Jessica, two young children — Sebastian and Leonardo — and a family shattered by a loss that came without warning.

A career built quietly, respected deeply

Alex Hughes never sought the spotlight that followed his father's name. Instead, he carved out a serious career on the operational side of football — performance analysis, player representation, and recruitment across Blackburn Rovers, Manchester City, Fulham, AFC Fylde, and Morecambe before joining Grimsby Town in 2025 as their Player Recruitment Lead.

He had only been at Grimsby a matter of months. In that short time, the club says he worked closely with manager David Artell to shape recruitment strategy and support the development of the first team. That's a role with real influence — the kind of behind-the-scenes work that rarely makes headlines but defines where a club ends up in five years.

Grimsby's statement was unambiguous about what they've lost: "His warmth, professionalism and positive personality leave an indelible mark on the Club and the wider football community."

Born during his father's Barcelona season

Alex was born in 1987, during the single season Mark Hughes spent at FC Barcelona — a brief but notable chapter in a playing career that also took in Manchester United, Chelsea, and Bayern Munich. Mark later managed Wales, Blackburn, Manchester City, and Fulham, and has been in charge of Carlisle United since 2025.

Football is full of people who trade on famous surnames. Alex Hughes didn't. He built something of his own, earned genuine respect across the game, and died far too young.

Grimsby Town have asked that the family's privacy be respected. "Rest in peace, Alex. Once a Mariner, always a Mariner."
