Frank Lampard scored against Chelsea in his second City appearance, was made captain on his last day at the Etihad, and received voice notes from Pep Guardiola when his managerial career hit early turbulence. For a man who spent 13 years at Stamford Bridge, his single season in Manchester left a surprisingly deep mark.
Lampard joined City in August 2014 at 36, freshly departed from Chelsea after winning the Champions League, Europa League, three Premier League titles, four FA Cups and more. He admits it was a "tough decision" — he'd never imagined playing for another Premier League club. But City, the reigning champions, wanted him, and Manuel Pellegrini made a personal pitch in New York about needing experience in the squad.
He took the leap. He's never questioned it since.
The Goal, the New Boy Feeling, and Three Statues
Walking into a dressing room containing Aguero, Kompany, David Silva, Nasri and Toure as a new signing in your late thirties is a different kind of pressure. Lampard describes feeling like "the new boy at school" — keeping quiet at first, reading the room, earning his place through training rather than reputation. It worked. The warmth he found, from players and staff alike, is the thing he keeps coming back to.
Then came the Chelsea game. Pellegrini brought him off the bench against his former club — Jose Mourinho's Chelsea, top of the table — and Lampard buried a late equaliser for a 1-1 draw. He says he "had a feeling" when he was warming up. Some inside knowledge of his old teammates' defensive habits probably didn't hurt either.
That goal kicked off a run of four in three games, and he finished the season with eight goals from 38 appearances as City ended second, behind champions Chelsea.
On the teammates he shared a dressing room with, Lampard doesn't hold back. Aguero gets the highest praise a striker can get — mentioned in the same breath as Didier Drogba. Kompany is flagged as a natural coach long before he became one. But it's David Silva who gets the most affectionate assessment.
"His humility as a lad made him even more special to me because he had zero ego. He just came in, did his job and did it at a high, high level."
He also, apparently, liked a beer with the lads until the end of the night. Lampard says he'd heard rumours before joining and genuinely didn't believe them.
All three — Aguero, Kompany, Silva — now have statues outside the Etihad. Lampard notes that says something about both the players and the club.
Guardiola's Voice Notes and What They Actually Meant
The most revealing part of Lampard's recollections isn't about his playing days — it's what happened after Chelsea lost 4-0 to Manchester United in his first Premier League game as manager in 2019, followed by a penalty shootout defeat to Liverpool in the Super Cup.
He was on his way back from Istanbul, frustrated but not despairing about the performances, when Guardiola sent him voice notes on WhatsApp saying he'd enjoyed the way Chelsea had played.
"When someone of his ilk sends you a voice note to say he enjoyed the way we'd played, it gave me a really good feeling. I have no qualms saying that."
Guardiola apparently did this at Everton too, and in between jobs. Wins, good luck messages, acknowledgements of style. Lampard is emphatic that it wasn't owed — Guardiola didn't have to do any of it — and that's exactly why it mattered.
It's also a useful reminder that the man Chelsea managers were trying to out-think for a decade was simultaneously sending those managers encouragement. Pep contains multitudes.
Lampard's City year ended with him being made captain for the final-day win over Southampton, scoring the opener, and being hoisted into the air by players and staff. He still has a photo of the signed shirt he was presented with hanging in his house.
"How exciting a signing was I coming in at 36? It's not a progressive signing," he admits. "But I'd like to think they saw my desire, my industry, my work ethic."
They clearly did. The Etihad crowd showed it. The staff showed it. And Pellegrini showed it by handing him the armband on the last day of the season.
