Toni Kroos is returning to Real Madrid. Not to the pitch — but in a role that Florentino Pérez himself is pushing for, with senior figures at Valdebebas already aligned on how to integrate him into the club's sporting structure next season.

The decision, according to reports, is firm. The only open question is the exact position he fills. That's a detail. The direction is set.

A reunion that's been building quietly

Kroos hasn't exactly been a stranger to Valdebebas since retiring in June 2024. He's visited the training ground twice in recent weeks, bringing youth teams from his football academy in Boadilla del Monte to face Real Madrid sides. On both occasions, he slipped naturally into a coaching role, sharing his knowledge with younger players. The club noticed. Florentino noticed more.

It's been two years since he left. His final match at the Bernabéu moved supporters to tears, and then six days later he lifted his sixth Champions League title — bowing out of professional football on terms so clean they felt scripted. That kind of exit leaves a certain gravitational pull, and Madrid have never really let go.

His life is already rooted here. Family settled in Madrid, academy up and running locally — the infrastructure for a return was already there before any formal conversations began.

What this actually means for Real Madrid

Madrid's midfield has looked for a personality to anchor it ever since Kroos walked away. A player who controlled tempo the way he did — rarely spectacular, always correct, always decisive — doesn't get replaced by a signing. You either have that profile or you don't. The club's recent seasons have made that absence visible.

Bringing him back in a structural capacity doesn't solve the on-field problem directly, but his day-to-day presence around the squad and coaching staff could shape how Madrid develop the next generation of central midfielders. Given how technically specific his role was, that influence might prove more valuable than any transfer.

Arbeloa and the former teammates he played alongside until last summer won't need much convincing of what he adds to any room he walks into.

The role is still undefined. The return isn't.
