Season 5 of Welcome to Wrexham lands on May 14, and if Wrexham are still in Championship playoff contention by then, the drama on screen is going to mirror exactly what's happening on the pitch.

Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney's documentary series returns on FX and Hulu in the US, and on Disney+ everywhere else. It covers the club's third consecutive promotion — from the National League all the way up to the Championship — a run that was frankly absurd when you consider Wrexham were outside the English Football League entirely as recently as 2023.

A playoff push with eight games to go

With eight matches remaining in the 2024-25 Championship season, Wrexham sit just outside the playoff places. That's not a comfortable position, but it's a live one. A top-six finish would put them one or two wins from the Premier League — which would be the most extraordinary football story in England in years, not just a feel-good TV moment.

That context makes the season 5 timing genuinely interesting for anyone tracking their promotion odds. The show has always been part sports documentary, part PR machine, and the US fanbase it's built has translated into real commercial value. Eight Primetime Emmys and two Critics' Choice Awards means this isn't niche content anymore.

What the show has built

The series kicked off in August 2022, when Wrexham were still in the fifth tier and Reynolds and McElhenney were still figuring out what they'd bought. Since then, three promotions. The documentary charted each one — the near-misses, the tension, the local community investment, the infrastructure overhaul.

Whether you're watching for the football or the Hollywood angle, season 5 has a sharper edge than any of the previous ones. The Championship is a different beast. The opponents are better, the stakes are higher, and the question of whether this fairytale has a ceiling is one the show can no longer avoid answering.

May 14. Mark it down.
