Liverpool's pursuit of Yan Diomande may have already hit its biggest obstacle — and it's wearing a familiar face. Jurgen Klopp, now head of global soccer for the Red Bull group, is reportedly the reason RB Leipzig are digging in on the 19-year-old winger and refusing to sell this summer.

According to Football Transfers and the Daily Mirror, Leipzig are "adamant" Diomande "is going nowhere this summer" — regardless of the offers that come in. That's a direct problem for Liverpool, who have placed the Ivory Coast international near the top of their summer wish-list.

Why Liverpool need this to happen

The urgency is real. Mohamed Salah is leaving. Cody Gakpo hasn't convinced anyone he's the long-term answer on the right. Liverpool need a winger, and they need one who can contribute immediately at the top end of the Premier League and in European competition.

Diomande ticks the profile. Leipzig value him at around €100m (£86m), and both Liverpool and PSG are "pushing" according to Fabrizio Romano, who described the situation plainly: "Liverpool want him, PSG want him, and Leipzig will dictate the conditions."

That last part is the problem. Leipzig just secured Champions League qualification, which means they have zero financial pressure to sell. Klopp's oversight over Red Bull's football network adds another layer — he knows Liverpool's recruitment model better than anyone, and he's not going to make Slot's rebuild easier by releasing one of the group's most valuable assets at a discount.

Leipzig's offer to Diomande changes the maths

Leipzig have already put a counter-proposal on the table: stay one more season, sign a new contract, take an improved salary, and leave in 2027 with a release clause included. For a teenager still developing, that's not an unreasonable pitch.

Romano confirmed Diomande is "still considering leaving this summer" — but that could change fast if Leipzig's resolve holds and no club is willing to go significantly above €100m. PSG are in the mix too, which means Liverpool won't get this done quietly or cheaply even if Leipzig do eventually budge.

The Reds are losing Salah and Robertson in the same window. Alisson staying steadies the ship slightly, but the attacking rebuild is the real test of the summer. Right now, the man who built Liverpool's last great team is the one making it harder to build the next one.
