FIFA has launched a racism investigation after an Argentina supporter allegedly directed abuse at YouTuber IShowSpeed during the World Cup last-32 match at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami on July 3.
Footage from IShowSpeed's own YouTube stream appears to show the 21-year-old — real name Darren Watkins Jr, wearing a Cape Verde kit — in a direct confrontation with the fan in the stands. FIFA confirmed it "immediately initiated an investigation" after being made aware of the incident.
FIFA's response is unambiguous
"FIFA strongly condemns racism, hate and discrimination in all forms," the governing body said in a statement. "Anyone who acts in a manner that undermines these values is not welcome in our game." Strong words. Whether they're backed by meaningful consequences for the individual involved is a different question — one FIFA's disciplinary process will now have to answer.
IShowSpeed is not some fringe internet figure who stumbled into a stadium. He has 56 million YouTube subscribers and 53 million on TikTok, and has been live-streaming matches throughout this summer's tournament. FIFA President Gianni Infantino discussed Cristiano Ronaldo's Club World Cup future on his channel. This is someone the sport's governing body has actively embraced as a promotional vehicle — which makes the optics of the incident even harder to ignore.
The match itself was a proper contest
Argentina edged through 3-2 after extra time in a game that had no right to be as chaotic as it was. Lionel Messi opened the scoring — his seventh goal of the tournament — but Deroy Duarte levelled before half-time. Lisandro Martinez put Argentina back ahead in extra time, Cape Verde equalised again through a Sidny Lopes Cabral stunner, and then Diney Borges turned the ball into his own net to send Argentina through.
Argentina now face Egypt in Atlanta. Cape Verde go home having pushed one of the tournament favourites to the absolute limit — and leaving a lasting mark on this World Cup for all the wrong reasons too.
