Kasey Keller Doesn't Buy the Messi or Ronaldo Fairytale at 2026 World Cup.

"I don't see Portugal winning the World Cup. I don't see Argentina being able to repeat their success." That's Kasey Keller — four World Cups played, zero sentimentality — cutting through the last-dance narratives around Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi before a ball has been kicked in North America.

The former Tottenham and USMNT goalkeeper, speaking with Jackpot City Casino, named Spain, France, and England as his genuine contenders. All European. No room for the two most decorated players in the sport's history.

The age problem no one wants to say out loud

By the time the 2026 tournament kicks off, Messi will be 38. Ronaldo will be 41. Messi actually turns 39 during the group stage — June 24, if Argentina make it that far. These aren't numbers you argue with.

Keller's logic isn't just about age, though. He thinks the squads around both icons have genuine gaps compared to Europe's heavyweights. On France: "If they get it together, then watch out." On England: "They have to be one of the favorites." Spain, in his eyes, is simply strong — no conditions attached.

Brazil gets a cautious mention too. "With no expectations, can Brazil step up when they haven't necessarily been playing well?" That's not a ringing endorsement. More of a wildcard acknowledgment than a genuine pick.

What the group stage actually tells us

Argentina drew Group J — Algeria on June 16 in Kansas City, Austria on June 22 in Dallas, Jordan on June 27. Manageable on paper. A defending champion should cruise through. But the knockout rounds are where Keller's skepticism becomes relevant, and Argentina's squad depth beyond Messi is a legitimate question that their odds should probably reflect more than they do.

Portugal lands in Group K against DR Congo, Uzbekistan, and Colombia — arguably the softer draw of the two. Getting Ronaldo to the round of 16 isn't the problem. Winning three knockout games against top European opposition almost certainly is.

  • Spain: Keller's top pick, no caveats
  • France: Elite squad, needs to "get it together"
  • England: Strong squad, Keller's warning about fan expectations is also a warning about pressure
  • Brazil: Wildcard, not in form
  • Argentina: Defending champions, Keller doesn't see a repeat
  • Portugal: Ronaldo confirmed for the tournament, Messi's participation still unconfirmed

On the Messi question specifically — he hasn't confirmed he's going. That detail is somehow underreported given everything else written about Argentina's World Cup chances. You can't defend a title with a maybe.
