Marc Cucurella didn't take long to decide. When Real Madrid called, the answer was immediate — and the deal was done before most people even knew talks had started.

"It all happened really fast," the Spain left-back told reporters on Thursday at the World Cup. "They called me in the morning and asked if I wanted to go. I had no doubts — it was a huge step in my career. In a day and a half, everything was done."

That's the short version of a €55 million transfer that caught almost everyone off guard, including, apparently, Chelsea. Cucurella admitted that a few months ago he wouldn't have expected to leave Stamford Bridge. Now he's signed through 2032 at the Bernabéu.

Mourinho noticed the details — that sealed it

What tipped Cucurella over the line emotionally wasn't just the badge. It was José Mourinho on the phone, referencing specific plays from when Cucurella faced Benfica. "He noticed those details," Cucurella said. "That gave me confidence — it made me feel this was the right step."

Atlético and Barcelona had also been in the picture, but the moment Madrid moved decisively, the conversation was effectively over. "The best thing that happened is that Madrid came in strong. When a club like that comes for you, it's very hard to say no." Hard, in this case, meaning impossible.

For a player who came through Barcelona's academy, the optics are complicated. Cucurella acknowledged the tension but kept it clean: "Life is about stages. I felt this was the step I had to take." He's not losing sleep over it — and given the terms on offer, it's difficult to argue with his logic.

Spain still need a result on Sunday

The transfer circus didn't derail Spain's World Cup camp, at least according to everyone inside it. Cucurella insisted his teammates were genuinely happy for him and that team unity hasn't shifted. Given the Cabo Verde result, that unity is about to be tested again.

Spain face Saudi Arabia on Sunday in Atlanta, sitting third in Group H — all four sides level on one point after the opening round. A team that won every match at the Euros is now fighting to avoid an early tournament crisis. Cucurella framed the Cabo Verde loss as a wake-up call rather than a warning sign. Whether the rest of the squad agrees will become clear in Atlanta.

Kick-off is at 6 p.m. ET, live on FOX and FS1. Spain's odds as tournament contenders aren't in freefall yet — but another dropped result would change that conversation fast.
