New Zealand police are investigating an alleged sexual assault involving a Cape Verde player, reported to authorities on April 10 following a FIFA Series match in Auckland — less than two months before Cape Verde are due to make their first-ever World Cup appearance.

The New Zealand Herald reported the allegation relates to an incident at the team's hotel after Cape Verde's March 27 fixture against Chile in Auckland. Police confirmed the investigation in a statement but offered no further details beyond the date the report was filed.

Timing could not be worse for a nation's biggest moment

Cape Verde are set to make their World Cup debut at the June 11–July 19 tournament across the United States, Canada and Mexico. A group-stage draw that includes former champions Spain, Uruguay, and Saudi Arabia was already going to be a steep climb for the small Atlantic archipelago nation. This investigation adds a shadow over preparations that should be focused entirely on the pitch.

New Zealand Football said they had not been contacted by police and would assist if required. Cape Verde's football federation was unreachable for comment. FIFA declined to respond.

The identity of the player has not been made public, and an investigation does not constitute a charge. But the timing — surfacing publicly just weeks before a squad would need to be named and travel confirmed — raises real questions about what the federation knows, when they knew it, and how they handle it from here.

Cape Verde's World Cup odds were already long before any of this. How their federation responds publicly in the coming days will say a lot about how seriously they're taking it.
