Kai Rooney has been to Old Trafford more times than most fans can dream of. He's crashed TV interviews, sat on the bench during his dad's testimonial, and celebrated five Premier League titles on that famous pitch.

But Friday night was different. This time, the Rooney name on the team sheet was his own.

The 16-year-old made his first competitive appearance as a Manchester United player at the Theatre of Dreams during an FA Youth Cup match. When legendary Old Trafford announcer Alan Keegan called out that Rooney was coming on, the 2,000-strong crowd erupted with 'Rooney, Rooney' chants.

Darren Fletcher, one of Wayne's former teammates and now part of United's coaching setup, brought Kai on as a substitute in extra time. Wayne and Coleen Rooney watched from the stands alongside interim first-team boss Michael Carrick, snapping photos of their son's special moment.

The Long Road to Old Trafford

Kai's journey to this moment hasn't been straightforward. When he was seven, he actually left United to join Manchester City because he wasn't enjoying his football. Wayne and Coleen never forced their kids into football, knowing the pressure that comes with the Rooney name.

He also spent time at Stockport County and Bethesda SC Washington when Wayne played in MLS. It wasn't until December 2020 that Kai returned to United and signed his first official contract.

The teenager suffered a major setback in his early teens when he broke both feet and was sidelined for eight months. It was his lowest point, but he leaned on his dad's experience to push through.

'I'm trying to make a name for myself, not try and be my dad,' Kai said back in August 2024. 'I want to see how my career goes and try to reach the biggest stages.'

Following in Famous Footsteps

Kai has adopted many of his dad's habits, especially around nutrition. He follows Wayne's old routine of loading up on carbs two days before matches, then switching to salmon and rice the night before games.

Those at United's academy have noticed his impressive discipline. He's fluent in Spanish, loves cooking, and has quirky habits like wearing laceless boots because of his wide feet.

Coleen once revealed that Wayne had to stop attending Kai's grassroots matches because he'd get swarmed by fans. 'He couldn't even watch the game,' she explained during her I'm A Celebrity stint. That's why Friday's moment meant so much - parents proudly watching their son live his dream.

Kai has had to be patient while peers moved up to Under 21s or earned international recognition. But he's always preached trusting the process. 'Different people get opportunities at different times,' he said. 'Keep working hard and your opportunity will come.'

For United's long-term prospects, having another Rooney potentially coming through the ranks is exciting for fans. While it's far too early for any transfer market speculation, youth players breaking through can significantly impact a club's future planning and financial valuations in the academy system.

Friday night proved Kai's opportunity has arrived. And unlike his cheeky handstand behind BT Sport's pundits in 2014, this time he let his presence on the pitch do all the talking.
