The football world is mourning a heartbreaking loss. Oxford United announced on Sunday, March 8, that 15-year-old goalkeeper Amelia Aplin passed away after collapsing during a Girls' Academy match against Fulham the day before.

The incident happened at Oxford United's Training Centre in Horspath. Despite the efforts of medical staff from both Oxford United and Fulham, as well as emergency services, Amelia tragically could not be saved.

Oxford United released a statement expressing their condolences. "The thoughts and sincere condolences from everyone at Oxford United are with Amelia's family, friends, teammates and coaches," the club wrote. They also asked that the family's privacy be respected during this incredibly difficult time.

Immediate Impact on Fixtures

The Oxford United Women were scheduled to play Real Bedford the day after the tragedy. That match was quickly postponed out of respect for Amelia and everyone affected by her passing.

The FA Women's National League also expressed their sadness. "Our thoughts are with Amelia's family, friends and everyone at Oxford United," the organization stated on social media. They promised continued support for the club during this devastating period.

Remembering a Talented Young Goalkeeper

Amelia wasn't just an Oxford United player. She was also a valued member of the Junior Premiere League WARRIORS community and represented the JPL ALL STARS programme.

The JPL shared a touching tribute on Instagram. "Amelia represented everything we hope to see in a young footballer: resilience, passion, and a strong team spirit," they wrote. Her courage and determination on the pitch left a lasting impression on everyone who played alongside her.

Martin Brock, chief executive of the JPL, called Amelia "a leader and bright light in our ALL STARS program." He added that her loss leaves a void that words cannot fill.

Oxfordshire Councillor Liam Walker joined the Oxford community in mourning. He described the news as "utterly devastating" and wrote on Facebook: "She will forever be a yellow." The entire football community stands with Amelia's family, friends, and teammates during this impossibly difficult time.
