Inter Miami made history at the White House on Thursday, but the ceremony turned into quite the spectacle. President Donald Trump, 79, admitted he'd actually forgotten the team was coming. "I got a lot of things going on," he joked during the event.

The visit brought Lionel Messi to the White House for the first time. Trump admitted his son Barron, 19, had to tell him one of the greatest players ever was dropping by. "It's my distinct privilege to say what no American president has ever had the chance to say before: Welcome to the White House, Lionel Messi," Trump announced.

Trump Shows Off His Soccer Knowledge

The President tried to flex his football credentials by recalling the New York Cosmos, the now-defunct club that once had Brazilian legend Pelé on its books. He even joked with the crowd, pointing at Messi and asking, "Who's better, him or Pelé?"

Trump seemed particularly impressed by Uruguayan striker Luis Suarez. He recalled one of Suarez's goals and made sure to shake his hand during the ceremony. Both Messi and Suarez have been crucial to Inter Miami's success since joining MLS.

What This Means for Inter Miami

The White House visit caps off an incredible period for Inter Miami. Having stars like Messi and Suarez has transformed the club into one of MLS's biggest draws. Their presence has made Miami favorites in betting markets for MLS competitions.

The ceremony took an odd turn when Trump made repeated comments about the team's appearance. "These are a good-looking people," he said while looking at the roster. "Marco, I don't like good-looking men," he added, addressing Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who was introduced as a "proud Miami sports fan."

Trump also showed some anxiety about Rubio's popularity during the event. "I don't want him to get too popular," he muttered before thundering the same phrase louder as applause died down.

For Inter Miami, this White House visit marks their growing status in American soccer. With Messi leading the line, they've become must-watch television and strong betting favorites whenever they take the pitch.
