MLS Set to Unlock New Revenue Stream With Back-of-Jersey Sponsors in 2026.

Major League Soccer is about to make a lot more money off their jerseys. And no, we're not just talking about selling more replica kits to fans.

Starting after the 2026 MLS All-Star break in late July, clubs will be allowed to sell advertising space on the lower back of player jerseys for the first time ever. This is a pretty big deal for the league's bottom line.

The timing isn't a coincidence. MLS is betting that soccer fever will be at an all-time high in North America after the 2026 FIFA World Cup wraps up. That means more eyeballs on games, which translates to more valuable advertising real estate.

"We feel like this is the right moment in time to unlock a new asset for our clubs to capture the attention coming out of the World Cup," said Carter Ladd, MLS's chief revenue officer. Smart move, really.

How Big Are These New Sponsor Patches?

The new logos can measure up to nine inches wide by four inches tall. That's about 80 percent the size of the main sponsor on the front of the jersey, which is still the most valuable spot.

To put that in perspective, it's way bigger than those tiny sleeve patches you see now. Those are only about 2.5 inches square on each arm.

Industry insiders think some teams could pull in more than $1 million per year just from this new back-of-jersey space. That figure will obviously vary based on market size and how many companies want in. For bettors keeping track of club finances, this injection of cash could help teams invest in better players down the line, potentially shifting the competitive balance.

MLS Leading North American Leagues in Jersey Money

This move gives MLS four separate sponsorship zones on their kits. That's actually more than other major North American sports leagues offer.

The NBA and MLB typically stick to one patch. The NHL has helmet and shoulder ads, but MLS now has front, both sleeves, and back covered. It's a model that mirrors what you see in European football, where back-of-shirt sponsors are totally normal.

Before 2020, MLS teams could only put sponsors on the front. The league has gradually opened up more real estate, including one sleeve for Apple TV's logo since they're the streaming partner.

One thing that's still unclear: will fans be able to buy replica jerseys with these back sponsors this season, or will clubs wait until the 2027 season? Either way, expect to see a lot more logos when you tune into MLS matches after that All-Star break next summer.
