Ireland Makes Its Move: FAI Bids to Host 2029 Women's Champions League Final.

Big news from Dublin! The Football Association of Ireland has thrown its hat in the ring to host the 2029 UEFA Women's Champions League final. If successful, the showpiece event would come to the iconic Aviva Stadium.

This is a pretty bold move that shows just how seriously Ireland is taking women's football. And honestly, they've got a decent shot at landing it.

Remember last year's final? Arsenal's Katie McCabe lifted the trophy after the Gunners beat Barcelona 1-0 in Lisbon. That victory at Estadio Jose Alvalade was a massive moment for women's football. This season's final heads to Oslo's Ullevaal Stadion, so the 2029 edition would be Ireland's chance to shine on the European stage.

Ireland Has the Experience

Here's why the FAI feels confident about this bid. The Aviva Stadium has already hosted two Europa League finals – one back in 2011 and another just last year in 2024. They know how to put on a big European night.

Plus, Ireland is gearing up for Euro 2028, where the Aviva will host seven matches including a last-16 clash and a quarter-final. The Republic of Ireland men's team will play all their group games there if they qualify directly. All that preparation work gives them a serious advantage.

The FAI spent three months doing their homework on this bid. They worked with Aviva Stadium officials, the Department of Culture, Communications and Sport, and Dublin City Council to make sure everything checks out.

What This Means for Women's Football

The timing couldn't be better. Women's and girls' football is exploding in popularity across Europe and Ireland is riding that wave. Landing this final would be huge for the sport's growth in the country.

The FAI is looking at legacy potential, whether they can actually pull it off, and of course, the costs involved. They reckon their collaborative approach with key partners puts them in a strong position to host the 28th staging of Europe's top women's club competition final.

The final bid submission is due in early June, so we'll know more soon. For Irish football fans and anyone interested in the women's game, this could be a game-changer. Keep your eyes on this one – Dublin hosting a Women's Champions League final would be something special.
