At 40 years old, James Milner just did something that might never happen again. On Saturday, he started for Brighton against Brentford in his 654th Premier League appearance, breaking Gareth Barry's record from 2017.

"Reaching that number of appearances is just like landing on the moon. Maybe it only happens once?" former Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp told ESPN. That's high praise from a manager who knows a thing or two about winning.

Think about this: Milner's career has been so long that he once played against England goalkeeper David Seaman, who's now 62. He's faced or played alongside 49% of every player who's ever stepped onto a Premier League pitch. That's absolutely mental.

Klopp managed Milner for nine years at Liverpool, watching him make 230 of those 654 appearances. "Of all the success we had at Liverpool, nothing would've happened without him," Klopp said. Coming from a manager who won the Premier League and Champions League, that's not just talk.

The Kid Who Never Stopped Working

Milner made his debut on November 10, 2002, at just 16 years old for his boyhood club Leeds United. His PE teacher, Jon Moss (who became a Premier League referee), remembers young Milner crying when his school team lost. "He was just that frustrated by it, though we didn't get beat very often," Moss said.

Former Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson, who now plays for Brentford (the team Milner just faced in his record-breaking match), saw that same fire. "You could never break him. No matter how bad the situation, no matter what's thrown at him, I always felt that he would react in the right way and come back stronger."

The professionalism started early. Former Villa teammate Luke Moore remembers 15-year-old Milner eating better and stretching more than everyone else. "His only vice, I think, was golf," Moore laughed.

When Leeds faced relegation in 2004, Milner had to leave his boyhood club. On the way out, he waived his £150,000 loyalty bonus, hoping it would help Leeds financially. That's the kind of character we're talking about.

Still the Fittest Man in Football

Here's something that'll make you feel out of shape: Milner is still the fittest player wherever he goes. Former teammate Curtis Davies says, "He's the most professional player I've ever played with. Him playing past 40 doesn't shock me at all."

Klopp remembers telling Milner to stop running in fitness tests because he was already the fittest. "But he just kept going," the German said. That relentless dedication is why Milner has won three Premier Leagues, two FA Cups, two League Cups, and one Champions League across six different clubs.

For Brighton backers, having a player with this much experience and fitness could be crucial in their push for European football. When you're betting on tight matches, players who can maintain their level late in games often make the difference.

Pundit Graeme Souness once said you could never win anything with a team of James Milners. Well, the quiet lad from Leeds with the same haircut he's had since he was three has proved that wrong time and time again. This record might stand for decades because, as Klopp says, "Being part of something for eternity is really special."

"I hope after game No. 780 or whatever he reaches, and he retires, the world desperately needs people like him," Klopp added. At 40, Milner shows no signs of stopping. The moon landing comparison seems spot on.
