Harry Kane Claims the 2026 Ballon d'Or, First English Winner Since Michael Owen.

Harry Kane has won the 2026 Men's Ballon d'Or, becoming the first English recipient of the award since Michael Owen's win in 2001. The Bayern Munich forward's triumph came at the end of what was described as the most open Ballon d'Or race ever held.

The result emerged in dramatic fashion before the official ceremony. The Ballon d'Or's website appeared to leak the winner by briefly publishing a congratulatory article announcing Kane's victory, before it became clear that similar articles had been prepared for both Kylian Mbappé and Lamine Yamal as contingency pieces. In the end, it was Kane's article that was republished to confirm the result.

Kane finished the 2025-26 season with 73 goals for club and country, the second-highest total ever recorded in a single European league season behind only Lionel Messi's 82 in 2011-12, and ahead of Gerd Müller's 72 in 1972-73. But the report stressed that reducing Kane to his goal tally undersold his wider contribution: only three players in the entire Bundesliga created more Opta-defined "big chances" than Kane last season, and just 14.8% of his touches came inside the penalty area, compared with 26.8% for Erling Haaland.

Bayern Munich manager Vincent Kompany, who faced Kane during his own time at Manchester City, praised the striker's evolution. "He has become better with age," Kompany said, describing Kane as "a top player who wants to run and fight for the team like a youth player."

Lamine Yamal, who had been considered a leading contender, used pre-ceremony campaigning to argue that the award should not be decided primarily on goal numbers. "I think the Ballon d'Or should go to the best player in the world, full stop. Not to a player who has scored 80 goals," he said. "If you score 80 goals, you get the top scorer award for that. Those are two completely different things that people do not understand." The comments were widely read as a dig at Kane, who at 33 ultimately claimed the award this time around.

At the same ceremony in London, Yamal did collect the Kopa Trophy for Best Young Player for a third straight year, according to an earlier report on the event. No player has ever won the main Ballon d'Or before turning 21, and Yamal will still be a teenager by the end of this season.

Kylian Mbappé, who had also been seen as a contender, was left waiting again. He has now finished in the top 10 of Ballon d'Or voting nine times, in every year since his first nomination in 2017. Speaking to France Football, Mbappé called the award "a true barometer," adding: "Just look at the list of winners -- there are no outsiders or frauds. Each in their own way, they've all left their mark on soccer history." He also said, "I remain convinced that the hardest part is winning the first one."
