Didier Deschamps learned of his mother's death on Tuesday morning and is flying back to France. He will not be on the bench when France face Norway in their final Group I match on Friday.

The French Football Federation confirmed the news in a statement, saying assistant coach Guy Stephan will take charge of the squad in Deschamps' absence — a decision made in agreement with FFF president Philippe Diallo, who is with the team at their base camp.

A result already secured, but context still matters

The timing, at least in footballing terms, is as kind as it could be. France have already punched their ticket to the knockout stage, beating Senegal 3-1 and Iraq 3-0 in their opening two games. There is nothing riding on Friday's result in terms of qualification.

That said, momentum and squad management ahead of the knockout rounds still matter. Stephan is an experienced operator who has been at Deschamps' side for years — this isn't a crisis, it's a disruption. But there's a difference between a team performing a training-ground routine and one responding to the emotional weight of a moment like this.

Group I finishing positions and goal difference could still influence the knockout bracket, which means France's odds in this game and beyond aren't entirely unaffected by the circumstances.

Guy Stephan steps into the spotlight

For Stephan, this is an unusual spotlight — not the kind any coach would ask for, but one that demands professionalism. The players know the situation. How they respond in the opening twenty minutes on Friday will say a lot about the dressing room culture Deschamps has built.

Deschamps will return after the funeral. France expect him back before the knockout stage begins. Until then, the federation's statement puts it plainly: he has entrusted Stephan with responsibility for leading the squad.

There's not much more to say about that. Some things are bigger than football.
