Ronaldinho Is Joining an Italian Serie C Club — Just Don't Expect Him to Play.

"New colours, same smile" — Ronaldinho's words ahead of a confirmed link-up with Italian Serie C outfit Ravenna FC. The announcement is expected to come next week in Miami, and yes, it's already being oversold on the internet.

The Brazilian, 46, last kicked a ball professionally for Fluminense in 2015. He officially retired in 2018. So when headlines screamed "career move," the reality check came quickly — and it came from inside the club.

What Ravenna's honorary VP actually said

Ariedo Braida, the club's honorary vice-president and a man who spent decades at the top of Italian football, was blunt: "Ronaldinho will do a marketing event with us, but he won't play for Ravenna in Serie C next season."

That's the story, really.

This isn't a comeback. It's a brand partnership dressed up in football kit. Ravenna are a Serie C side — three divisions below Serie A — and attaching Ronaldinho's name to their club ahead of the 2026/27 season is a savvy commercial play, not a sporting one. Whether it translates to anything meaningful on the pitch is a separate question entirely.

Ronaldinho, for his part, leaned into the romance of it. "Football has always been a source of joy for me, and I want to bring that same spirit to Ravenna," he said. He also called Ravenna "home," adding that despite spending 24 years of his life in the United States, the Italian city still holds a special place for him.

The career he actually had

The 2002 World Cup. The 2005 Ballon d'Or. Those Barcelona years — the nutmegs, the backheels, the goal at the Bernabéu that made Real Madrid fans stand and applaud. Ronaldinho didn't just play football; he made people forget to breathe for a second.

At 46, though, the dancing is now decorative. Ravenna get a global name on their letterhead. He gets a stage. Nobody's getting a footballer.
